Right Turn: Making science sexy again

Author: Stacey Johnson, 12/04/15

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s “hot” new prime minister, is getting Canadian scientists all worked up – in a good way. For the first time in nearly ten years, the scientific community has a passionate champion in Ottawa ready to undress – sorry unmuzzle – federal scientists and “bring scientific considerations into all aspects of their decision making” (The Globe and Mail, Nov. 28, 2015). From now on, these underappreciated, neglected government scientists can strip away their reservations and share their findings directly with the public to unburden themselves. Now, what is sexier than full disclosure and honesty?

As a tribute to Canada’s new favourite Justin (sorry Biebs) and Maclean’s 2015 newsmaker of the year, I am inspired by another Justin from the south who brought “sexy back.”

“Science Back”

[Verse 1]

I’m bringing science back

Them other boys don’t know how to act

I think you’re smart and have a right to speak

So here’s your chance don’t use ancient Greek

Take ‘em to the bridge

[Bridge]

Brilliant doc

I’ll listen closely

Cause you really rock

You know your stuff, took you years to learn

I’ll help you shine it’s definitely your turn

Take ‘em to the chorus

[Chorus]

Come here PI

Go ahead, tell the truth

Question it

Go ahead, tell the truth

PhD

Go ahead, tell the truth

hypothesis

Go ahead, tell the truth

Let me see what your data says

Go ahead, tell the truth

Look at those awards

Go ahead, tell the truth

You make me proud

Go ahead, tell the truth

Go ahead friend

Go ahead, tell the truth

And get your science on

Go ahead, tell the truth

Get your science on

Go ahead, tell the truth

[Repeat six times]

Get your science on

[Verse 2]

I’m bringing science back

Them silly Tories don’t know how to act

Come let me make up for the things they lack

‘Cause you’re da bomb and deserve a large cognac

Take ‘em to the bridge

[Bridge]

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]

I’m bringing science back

You silly Tories watch how I attack

You missed your chance and need to watch your back

This country’s mine, I’m hot and that’s a fact

Take ‘em to the chorus

[Chorus]

(Apologies to Justin Trudeau and Justin Timberlake.)

And in the words of the newly elected Prime Minister in his acceptance speech, “we’re back.”
