Happy Thanksgiving to our American family, friends and colleagues. It may feel like 2017 didn’t offer quite as much to be thankful for on a global level, but there was one uplifting international event that rocked our world.
Despacito.
On January 12, 2017, Universal Music Latin released “Despacito” and its music video. According to reliable sources, the video is the most watched of all time, with more than three billion* views. (Click here to read how well it has done in other categories.) The remix introduced in April, featuring Justin Bieber, recently won him his second Grammy and his first Latin Grammy.
With so much air time, Despacito was bound to become an earworm and fodder for parodies. If you haven’t seen the three Italian men in a car mocking Despacito, you need to right now.
Another Despacito parody that you must watch is A Capella Science explaining evolutionary biology to the music of Despacito. The effort that must have gone into writing the lyrics is worthy of its own Science Grammy. With just under one million views, let’s help Montreal physicist Tim Blais’ version become an earworm (although how you’d remember the lyrics, I don’t know.)
Bravo!
