Remember back in 2013 when Tourism Australia launched the “Best jobs in the world” global youth campaign? Well, the Waag Society in Amsterdam may just have the “coolest science summer job” around! (Yes, Waag Society, you can quote me on this.)
The Waag Society, an “institute for art, science and technology,” needs a science bus captain to drive their science bus across Europe. This is their pitch:
We’re looking for enthusiastic, hands-on workshop leaders with excellent social skills and a love for science to drive our Science Bus across Europe. Turn the summer of 2017 into an adventure on the open road. Are you an experienced driver who wants to discover Europe? Do you have a love for DIY-science and enjoy teaching others new skills? Are you creative, curious, and like to document your daily adventures on social media? Then we might have the perfect summer job for you!
And here is how they explain the job:
As the captain of our vessel, you’ll drive the Science Bus to various locations across Europe: from the Netherlands to Italy, from Kosovo to France. On location, you lead workshops in collaboration with local partners. During the trip, you collect and examine folk remedies from citizens across Europe and share the results online. We send you on your way with plenty of materials and “instructables” to make DIY measuring instruments with the locals.
You need a driver’s license and they’d prefer that you’ve had it for three years. If you speak French as well as English, that’s an asset. You need to be a vlogger or willing to learn. You will be paid, or maybe you’re supposed to pay them for the opportunity? If you get the job, I’d consider paying you to tag along on the trip! Most importantly, the deadline is April 28, 2017.
Waag Society 2017
If driving on the open roads of Europe doesn’t turn your crank, STEM Camp is hiring. Big time. In 2016, they predicted they’d have 40-50 locations across Ontario this summer. STEM Camp claims to be “one of the largest specialty summer camp employers in Ontario.” They look to be hiring for hundreds of positions from camp directors to program coordinators to counsellors. Why not check them out? Good luck and remember to pack the mosquito repellant.
If you had a more academic summer job in mind, the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital (in Toronto, Canada) is looking for students to be summer interns. They must have successfully completed Grade 11 Biology and Chemistry, as a mimimum, and be 16 years old at the start of the internship. There are important details regarding hours, salary ($3,500 for eight weeks) and application requirements (such as a 500-word essay). Review the background for the program here.
