It was huge news in Canada on Wednesday (January 13) when the Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM) and GE Healthcare announced their partnership in the development of a new centre for advanced therapeutic cell technologies. GE Healthcare is providing CAD $20 million that the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) is matching dollar for dollar. The $40 million centre, to be built in Toronto, Ontario, and located at the MaRS West Tower, will develop solutions to solve manufacturing bottlenecks and make cell therapy affordable, available and scalable. Patients around the world will benefit from this initiative.
Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, traveled to Toronto to announce the government’s financial support of the new centre at an event for media, academics, industry, customers, business leaders and politicians. He was joined on the podium by two members of his cabinet, and the CEOs of CCRM and GE Canada.
